The History of Bicycles

The history of bicycles, as we know them, has a very short history.  The first documented and verifiable bicycle (consisting of two wheels and requiring the rider to balance themselves) did not come on the scene until the early 19th Century.   The first, (making use of two wheels, and archetype of the bicycle), was the German draisine in 1817.  In the subsequent decades, there were various forms of human-powered devices like the velocipede, 3 and 4-wheelers (1820's - 1850's), the Michaux or "boneshaker" in the 1860's, the high-wheel bicycle in the 1870's.  Significant changes and improvements in bicycles occurred with the introduction of the safety bicycle in the 1880's and 1890's, which were more practical and useful for the riders.  By the 20th Century, cycling had become extremely popular in the United States and in Europe, with bicycle clubs starting up, and bicycles being used as an important means of transportation and recreation.  Today, there are dozens of different types of bicycles on the market to choose from and it continues to be a popular activity and sport for many people around the world.
